An innovative 3D Head unlike any other! Cast from lightweight magnesium, the head can be positioned in virtually any position to get the exact framing of the image. The lock-system using spring-loaded conical joints allows greater flexibility than any other 3D head whether mounted on a tripod centre column or lateral arm. The rubber grip knobs provide finger tip control and won’t poke you in the eye like conventional handles do. The 460Mg is the ideal head in combination with the Carbon Number

Best design for a tripod head so far, September 26, 2010

I own one of nearly every design of tripod head – video, ball head, squeeze level ball, and full geared head. I had purchased this thinking it was a mini geared head which is the fraction of the size and weight of my 3275, so I was a bit disappointed to find it wasn’t geared.

My disappointment quickly faded as I began using it. The knobs are placed in intuitive locations, unlike my previous geared head. On the 3275 I always confused the left-right tilt with forward-back tilt. Not so on then 460MG. The knobs are right where they should be for a right-handed person. I also liked being able to quickly move from horizontal to vertical with a single twist to loosen, rather than many tuns of the geared head. It’s also much smaller and lighter.

The advantage over a ball head is I can lock in a particular axis and work the others. With a ball, it’s all or nothing. With the 460MG, I can level the camera horizontally first, then work on tilt and rotate. And, since there is no weight on the rotate axis I can leave that free.

The problem I had with my squeeze level balls is that, no matter how gently I release my grip from the lever it always knocks the camera just a bit off axis. Not so with this head. I can tighten up a knob just a bit, fine-tune it, and lock it down.

The 460MG has quickly become my favorite head for landscape photography. It supports up to 6.6 pounds.

If you are using Manfrotto ball heads and are frustrated with the lack of control they offer then this affordable head will solve the problem. It’s exactly the opposite of a ball head because it offers control of each axis independently. That slows down the process but makes it more predictable and accurate. Unlike a basic ball head, if you need to rotate there is no need to loosen all the controls, just the one corresponding to rotation.

The unique thing about this model is that unlike other three way heads the control knobs are much smaller/compact which makes for much easier storage and transportation. On the negative side the controls need more force to tighten/loosen, but it isn’t anything beyond the ability of the average adult. Also, as you tighten and loosen the knobs your original settings might slightly change.

The RC2 quick release system with the included plate is awesome. When seated in the quick release socket the plate has a little play. Some might find that objectionable, but the plate is so compact that one quickly overlooks this weakness.

I find my self using this head for all of my portrait, landscape and commercial photography. Only product and architectural photography have made me reconsider this head in favor of the Manfrotto 410 gear head. That head however goes for double the cost of the 460MG. For those looking for value and convenience this head is best priced, offers very practical design, and super compact quick release plate.

This works very well for landscape pictures. Easy to get those panned pictures. I like the ability to setup each axis on its own for those special pictures. Not as fast as a ball type though.

Seems very well made and should hold up to years of use. quite lightweight since mostly magnesium !
