Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H20The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H20 is a new super-zoom digital camera, offering a 10x image stabilized Carl Zeiss lens that covers a focal range of 38-380mm, housed in a compact, go-in one package. Other key features of the Sony H20, a successor to last year’s model H10, including a 10 megapixel sensor, HD 720p video recording, a large 3 inch LCD, improved Face Detection and Smile Shutter function and the optimizing the dynamic range. It is also a clever way to the scene for both beginners and recognition of a range of manual exposure modes for more experienced users. With an official price of $ 280 / £ 269 at launch, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H10 is a good value. Zoltan Arva-Toth finds that if the Sony H20 can compete with its main rival super-zoom.

Those who take a quick look at the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H20 digital camera can be forgiven for thinking that was updated only an increase in the H10 model last year – but if you read, is that significant improvements have have made the handling, functionality and image quality as well.

What has not changed is the stabilized 38-380mm equivalent f/3.5-4.4 Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar zoom, which is not as wide as some competitors super-zoom compact models like the Panasonic Lumix DMC or the recently announced TZ7 Casio EX-H10, but at least the most extreme telephoto. Like most small sensors Digicams compact, the Sony H20 is no iris diaphragm of the lens, which means that the word “stop” refers only to buy a module density filter Neutral. Thus, only two aperture settings at their disposal, regardless of where you are in the zoom range. Another corollary is that there is no interruption in the slightest effect on the depth field, which can not be controlled by changing the focal length or camera to subject distance, if possible.

The handful of right, which seems a little over a post in the H10 is much more integral part of the body of the Sony H20, which is now a sport too textured rubber coating, it feels comfortable to hold. The new model also has a thumb on the back of the body, as it is rubber. All this means that the H20 is much nicer to hold than its predecessor.

The controls on the top of H20 has also undergone some changes, both in terms of design and functionality. More importantly, the trigger is surrounded by a zoom lever, as in most compact cameras – this is more intuitive button switches on the back of the old model. In addition, the elongated shape the power button H10 has been replaced by the series of two buttons, one of them offers the same on / off function, while the other changes the “Smile Shutter” feature.

When the device is in the “Smile Shutter” mode, you must not use the trigger of all – monitors H20 bases smile, and when it detects one, the shutter is released automatically. The sensitivity of the “Smile Shutter” can be set in the menu. It is a pleasure that any company can keep entertained for quite some time – but we’d really be able to reprogram this button to go directly to the creation of the ISO or exposure compensation, which Menu functions are focused on the H20.
